Established in 2021, the Hutchins Institute for Social Justice is an innovation in secondary education advancing social justice through scholarship, programming, and experiential learning.

The Hutchins Family Foundation, which focuses its change-making efforts in the areas of education, health, and public policy, provides primary funding for the Institute. Co-founder Glenn Hutchins is a trustee emeritus of 51吃瓜 and member of the Class of 1973.

Zaheer Ali serves as the Hutchins Institute’s inaugural executive director and is responsible for designing, developing, and directing its programs.

Functioning primarily as an academic hub, the Hutchins Institute's approach to social justice studies is rooted in a pedagogy designed around three questions that engage social justice as subject, method, and ethics, respectively:

As a subject of study, what is social justice?
As a method of analysis, how do we encounter the world using a social justice lens?
As an ethics of practice, how do we apply the lessons of our social justice studies in our community engagement?

These questions guide the work of the Hutchins Institute's initiatives in the areas of scholarship, programming, and experiential learning.

SCHOLARSHIP >>

Hutchins Scholars in Social Justice

Through a two-week summer residency and a fall term course, the Hutchins Scholars in Social Justice program offers selected rising seniors (V Form students) an opportunity to immerse themselves in the multidisciplinary examination of social justice through study, analysis, and ethical practice. Classroom activities, team- and community-building exercises, and experiential learning with expert practitioners and through field trips serve as the basis for Scholars to study social justice movements and issues, utilize methods of deep listening and systems analysis, and cultivate practices of ethical community engagement. During the fall course, students deepen their study and complete social justice projects of their own. Applications for the Hutchins Scholars in Social Justice program open to juniors (IV Form students) in the winter term.

Hutchins Faculty Fellows in Social Justice

The Hutchins Faculty Fellows in Social Justice program supports faculty scholarship in social justice studies and teaching. Each Hutchins Faculty Fellow receives institutional support and a stipend during the academic year to complete a project that advances scholarship in their respective fields relating to social justice as a subject matter and/or as pedagogical practice. A primary objective of the fellowship is to support faculty scholarship that is public-facing and can be amplified externally to audiences beyond the Lawrenceville community. Applications for the Hutchins Faculty Fellows in Social Justice program open in the spring term.

Course Offerings

In addition to the Social Justice Scholars Seminar offered to Hutchins Scholars in Social Justice, the Hutchins Institute also offers a winter term interdisciplinary course titled, "Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X." Its title notwithstanding, the course challenges any singular or binary reduction of the diversity, complexity, and expansiveness of the Black freedom movement. Challenging the "Great Man Theory" of history, students examine the lives of both King and X within the broader context of the social forces, communities, ideologies, belief systems, and philosophies that shaped their lives and advocacy.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration

The Hutchins Institute for Social Justice organizes Lawrenceville's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration in collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement, and the Lawrenceville Community Service Program. As a presenting partner, the Hutchins Institute has been primarily responsible for developing program components that highlight the social justice themes of King's life and legacy.

Mini-Residencies

Hutchins Institute for Social Justice Mini-Residencies are visits by scholars, artists, activists, and practitioners working to advance social justice. They provide opportunities to deepen our thinking about social justice, listen to and learn from each other, and promote community-centered and impact-focused action. Each Mini-Residency visit is designed to offer a range of programs that allow for multiple points of contact for members of our community, including school-wide assemblies, professional development for educators, guest teaching in classes, and informal gatherings during meals and receptions. Past guests included historian and journalist Dr. Stacey Patton '96 and Irish-American activist and author Michael Patrick MacDonald.

Listening as a Creative Act

Listening as a Creative Act is a curated music listening series that guides participants, and invites them to guide each other, through the creative and intentional listening to music as a way to explore identities, share histories, build community, and expand our imaginations. The listening practice is built around four acts — search, discovery, resonance, and understanding — that frame participants' engagement with each song and their reflection on the ways they construct meaning about, and form attachment to, music. This meaning-making models a creative process that is attentive, exploratory, and collaborative; and cultivates the curiosity and wonder that are essential to the work of social change.

Community Workshops

Drawing on their social justice studies, Hutchins Scholars in Social Justice design and facilitate workshops for the community as part of programs like Democracy Day and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration. Past workshops have explored the art of politics and the politics of art, offered a crash course in video storytelling, examined the role of social media in civic life, introduced systems analysis to understand the underlying causes of social issues, assessed the viability of political labels, and engaged in social justice-inspired game play.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING >>

Experiential Learning

The Hutchins Institute organizes experiential learning opportunities through site visits, field trips, and training with artists, activists, scholars, and practitioners. Offered as part of the Hutchins Scholars in Social Justice program, past experiences have included a visit to the African Burial Ground in New York City; a lunch conversation with Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz, at the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Center (formerly the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was assassinated); a Harlem history walking tour; meeting with members of the Ironbound Community Corporation for an environmental justice tour of the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, NJ; and interviewing attendees at Pride and Juneteenth celebrations. The Institute also organizes activities open to the broader student community as well, such as a field trip to Brooklyn to attend a performance of "Little Syria" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and meet the show’s creator, Omar Offendum.

The Hutchins Institute for Social Justice is located on the 2nd floor of the Hutchins Center, adjacent to the Gruss Center for Art and Design (GCAD). The main entrance for the Hutchins Center is the entrance facing the Noyes Quad and McPherson House.
