Lawrentians Present Research at Annual Classical Association of the Atlantic States Conference

Four Lawrenceville students recently presented their research at the annual fall conference of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States (CAAS). Hosted by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, CAAS gathers classics teachers and students from colleges in the northeastern United States to present their research. For the past six years, Lawrenceville students, led by language educator Scott Barnard, have shared their work with this expert group.

This year, Fifth Formers Rian Julka “A Metamorphosis Through Anger: Seneca’s de Ira and Medea,” Alice Kizilbash “Lucretius’ de Rerum Natura and the Philosophy of Science,” Sienna Mora "Nero in Greece: The Economic Motivations of a Notorious Roman Emperor," and Kathlynn Yao ("A Double Edged Sword and a Mirror for All: Exploring Mockery and Jest in Horatian Satire") made the short trip to New Brunswick, N.J. to present their research.

Julka, Mora, and Yao are all students in Barnard’s (college level) Honor’s Latin: Cicero and the Fall of the Republic while Kizilbash (who took Honors Latin last year) is in his Introduction to Ancient Greek course.

Barnard said he is “absolutely gushing with pride for everything they have done and are doing! Their presence and performance was simply outstanding and I wish everyone could have seen the enthusiasm with which their projects were delivered and received.” He continued, “Several members of the audience approached me to share their delight at the work our young scholars in Classics promise for the future.”
